Talon

At last, my queen needs us. I’ve known this moment would come since before we met. I didn’t know when, or how, but I knew it was coming.

I just didn’t think it would happen so fast. Anna collapsed almost without warning. She’s suddenly glowing a pale gold from her fingertips to the tips of her beautiful blonde hair. The pale glow even shows through her clothes, like she’s turning into a new sun to warm our planet.

Phoenix is kneeling by her, clutching her hand. Thankfully, she seems to be able to handle his touch. It makes sense. He’s the healer among us all.

“What do we do?” Silver mutters frantically. I can see the guilt in his face—he didn’t know what his words would inspire. None of us did, including Anna.

His asshole father certainly didn’t. Aster is standing rigidly, his mouth hanging open like a very ugly statue. I doubt he or his men will pose any threat to the vampires, but it seems disrespectful to keep them bound like prisoners.

So I kneel in front of them and draw my knife, slashing their bonds without hesitation. Both vampires nod gently to me and I smile back at them. I like them. I don’t want them to be prisoners for any longer than they must be, although I don’t get the impression they found this situation as humiliating as I might.

They knew this had to play out the way it did. That means they might have the answers as to what we do next.

“Please,” I whisper to them, seeking guidance. “I wish to save my queen.”

The older vampire rubs his wrists and rises to his feet slowly. “What have you seen, Dragon Talon?”

“I…”

My lips part as the answer glows as clearly in my mind as anything I’ve ever seen. The dream has come back over and over since I first met Anna. It pointed me to her, and all of these men. It held my faith when I didn’t know what faith was.

Five moons around one Star.

“Come,” I tell the others as I turn and sink to my knees beside Anna. I want to hug her and hold her close, but I know that won’t help right now. Her magic covers miles of mountain slopes and slips along the breezes. It’s everywhere and it’s still growing to take more and more in. Her abilities, so new and sudden, must be a shock.

It’s always been our job to protect her. That doesn’t change, even now that we all know who she is—and who we are, and where our destiny lies.

My other mates see what I mean as I pull Blade down to his knees next to me on one side, then Silver on the other. We join hands, allowing our magic to crash together. It knows what to do. It’s almost seamless, the flow of power through me. Within a fraction of a second, I don’t know what magic originally started out as mine and what came from the others.

It’s all just ours.

The very last step is for Phoenix to let go of Anna’s hand and join hands with us.
